How to choose your smartphone in 2024
Rapid technological evolution and fierce competition between manufacturers make it difficult to choose the right smartphone model. What criteria should you use to decide?
Xavier Studer shares his common-sense thoughts on his blog (in french), encouraging readers to think carefully about their real needs before giving in to the siren calls of salespeople who are always quick to promote top-of-the-range models.
Key factors to consider include the device's software lifespan (guaranteed updates), processor power and amount of RAM, battery life, camera and screen quality, storage capacity, connectivity standard (4G or 5G), etc.
As an example, the iPhone 16 available in autumn 2024 has the following features:
iOS updates for around 6 years: this usually equals or exceeds the lifetime of the device.
A18 processor: one of the most powerful processors available today. This power is especially useful for 3D video games, photo and video processing and artificial intelligence.
RAM: 8 GB of RAM, required for the artificial intelligence available in 2025.
Storage capacity: 128, 256 or 512 GB. If you need to store a large number of high-resolution photos and videos, 256 GB is the minimum.
Battery life: up to 22 hours of video playback, between 1 and 2 days for standard use.
Camera: 2 cameras on the back with two different focal lengths and 1 camera on the front for selfies.
Screen: 6.1 or 6.7 inch diagonal OLED screens with such high resolution that individual pixels are not visible to the naked eye, high brightness to ensure comfortable reading even in strong sunlight.
Connectivity : 3G, 4G and 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3
If all these features exceed your needs, a mid-range device such as the Samsung Galaxy A35 or A55 is probably sufficient. However, avoid entry-level phones costing less than CHF 200, as their mediocre performance will soon show its limits and shorten their lifespan.
And once you've made up your mind, a visit to the Toppreise website to compare the prices offered by different brands may prove useful.
As a reminder, Office Maker Business software features a function called OMB Mobile, offering secure remote access to key company data from a smartphone or tablet: consulting the address file, viewing the history of contacts with a customer or prospect, checking stock levels, and entering activities all offer a high degree of autonomy to employees in the field.
